DPL Group’s installation of Mechanical and Electrical works at Homerton College’s Dining Hall

Homerton College, a prestigious institution of higher education in Cambridge, sought to enhance its dining facilities to better serve its students and staff. The project’s scope encompassed the installation of both mechanical and electrical systems to improve functionality and energy efficiency.

M&E installation works commenced January 2021 and project handover was March 2022. The new Dining Hall provides approximately 1750m2 of new building including a new catering kitchen, dining hall, staff welfare, sanitary and staff facilities.

The design of the Dining Hall, its architecture, choice of materials and M&E strategies have been considered in conjunction with a Bespoke Sustainability framework. This framework has been developed specifically for this project, to meet the sustainability aspirations of the College and allow it to focus on aspects of the brief that are important to them.

This project is gaining many accolades, including the following Award wins:

  • Winner: RIBA East Award 2024
  • Winner: Craftmanship Award – Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry 2023
  • Winner: Gold Award – UK’s Best New Timber Building 2022 Plus Structural and Education & Public Awards

Challenges

  • Complex Coordination
Coordinating both mechanical and electrical installations in an existing structure with various stakeholders involved required a meticulous and organised approach.
  • Energy Efficiency
