How long will it take to install an EV charger?

Usually, installation takes around half a day in an average home. It might depend on how far your fuse box is from the charging point and if we need to run cables through/under rooms – in which case, we may need a little more time to complete.

What is ‘fast charging’?

This is an EV charging term used to describe chargers and/or vehicles whose charge capacity is between 7kW to 22kW. Depending on the size of the battery, it will take around eight hours to fully charge a typical battery electric vehicle (BEV). A 22kW charger is obviously the faster option, but they need a 3-phase connection, which is not often found in domestic properties.

What is ‘rapid charging’?

This is a higher capacity charging option available only in commercial scenarios. Capable of charging in a range of 43kW to 150kW, you will find rapid chargers at service stations, supermarket car parks and designated street charging points – but we also expect them to soon become common at garages and filling stations. 

Rapid chargers come in AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current). AC rapid chargers operate at 43kW, while DC rapid chargers are rated 50kW and upwards. Both types of unit will charge most EVs to 80% in approximately 30-60 minutes, depending on the capacity of the battery. We expect greater numbers of faster 120kW and 150kW rapid charging points to appear soon, so times will speed up accordingly.

What’s the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 chargers?

These are the most common domestic charging units, providing the connection between your power supply and your EV, and the one you need will depend on your vehicle. You’ll find that most Asian car brands (such as Nissan and Mitsubishi) use a Type 1 connector, which features a five-pin plug. However, most American and European manufacturers (like VW, Volvo, Renault, Mercedes, BMW and Audi) use a Type 2, which has a seven-pin plug connector. Type 2 seems to be becoming the most popular charging connector, so we may see the industry adopting this as standard over the course of time.

Will an electric car increase my electricity bill?

The short answer is yes, but this will be more than balanced by the money you are no longer spending on traditional petrol or diesel. As part of your regular household or business electricity use, the increase will not be too drastic, and you could take advantage of specialist electric car energy tariffs to help keep your costs lower.

Will EV chargers blow my fuse board?

EV chargers are designed to operate within normal domestic or business electricity charging capacity, so this should not be an issue. We will assess your electric system and supply thoroughly ahead of installation to make sure the charger is compatible with your property to avoid problems, and may in some cases recommend installing a 3.7kW charger instead of the usual 7.4kW, but this is rare.

    A 75% grant up to the value of £350 is available for all employee home locations.
  • OZEV Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)
    A 75% grant up to the value of £350 per charger is available for up to 40 charge points at commercial locations.
